Some complexes have inner courtyards behind a second gate, several named blocks sharing one garden, and a garage entrance that looks more like the front door than the front door does. Three habits make these buildings easy. Give the block name or number as well as the street address, because a complex can span three streets with one postcode. Say whether the lift needs a fob; if it does, come down and ride up with her. And if the intercom calls your phone rather than a panel in the flat, keep that phone audible. The arrival itself is quick once those parts are sorted.

Relocation flats and month-to-month furnished apartments bring a landlord's belongings into the equation. The sofa, the bedding and the rug belong to somebody else, and some inventories get checked at the end of the lease. This is where the kit earns its place. Her linen leaves with her afterwards. Your landlord's towels stay folded in the cupboard. Two further notes apply to managed buildings. Apartment life in this city is lived close together. Many older buildings have timber floors laid on beams, and footsteps travel downward more clearly than voices travel sideways. A session on a bed makes very little noise. What carries is the traffic around it: two people crossing a wooden floor in shoes, a door swung shut, a conversation held in the hallway. Take shoes off at the door, as most Dutch households already do. Keep the welcome inside the flat rather than on the landing. Choose a bedroom that sits above another bedroom rather than above a neighbour's living room if the flat allows the choice. None of this is about secrecy. It is ordinary courtesy in a building where eight households share the same stair, and it keeps the arrival indistinguishable from a friend dropping by.
