Amsterdam is built for cold. Thick walls, radiators under every window, heating systems that run eight months a year. Air conditioning is rare in private flats and rarer still in canal houses. So when a July heatwave sits on the city for a week, the bedroom you booked a session in may be the warmest room you have been in all day.
That does not make an outcall massage in a heatwave a bad idea. It means the room needs a different kind of preparation from the one it gets in February, and the timing of the booking is worth a thought.
Which rooms stay coolest
Height is the main factor. Top-floor flats under tiled roofs collect the day's heat and hold it well past midnight. Ground-floor and half-basement flats stay cooler, sometimes noticeably so. If you have a choice of rooms, go lower.
Orientation is the second factor. Rooms facing the back of a block, over gardens, usually escape the afternoon sun that bakes the street side. They are quieter too, which matters with windows open.

Timing the booking around the heat
Late evening and the small hours are the coolest part of a hot day indoors. A booking at 23:00 or later meets a room that has had a few hours to shed heat. Early morning, between 06:00 and 09:00, is the other good window, before the sun reaches the windows.

Preparing a room for an outcall massage in a heatwave
- Keep the sun out all day. Close blinds and curtains in the morning, not when you get home. Heat that never enters is easier than heat you try to remove.
- Air the room in the evening. Open windows on opposite sides of the flat once the outside air is cooler than the inside, and let it run through.
- Close up before arrival. Sound travels from open windows into courtyards and neighbouring flats, and at night it carries well.
- Place a fan with care. Point it at the room, not at the bed. A fan blowing across oiled skin cools one side and not the other.
- Switch the lamp on late. An open window beside a lit lamp near the canals invites mosquitoes in summer, and one in the room is a surprisingly effective distraction.
What changes in the session
Not much, and the therapist adapts to the room as she finds it. Warm skin takes oil differently, and she adjusts the amount accordingly. Less linen is needed over you. Pauses for a glass of water are welcome for both of you.
Formats that finish under a shower gain something in hot weather. A rinse at the end of a nuru or soapy session is often the most pleasant few minutes of a July evening. The only practical check is the one that applies all year: enough hot water, which in summer usually means enough water at all, since a shared building's pressure can dip when everyone showers at once.
Heat and the overnight
An eight-hour overnight at EUR 1,250 in midsummer meets a short, bright night. Around the solstice the sky starts to lighten well before five, and thin curtains let it straight into the bedroom. If the plan is to sleep through to a late morning, a dark cloth pinned over the window does more than any fan. Early refuse collection and birds in the courtyard trees start around the same time, which is one more reason to keep the windows shut once the room has cooled.
Looking after the arrival

What stays the same
The rate is EUR 180 an hour in August exactly as it is in January. Confirmation arrives in about ten minutes, travel in the centre takes twenty to thirty, and payment is settled at the door. There is no summer surcharge, no seasonal minimum and no reason to postpone a booking for the weather, only a reason to time it well and close the curtains early.
